A settlement survives because people can grow food, mend nets, repair engines, treat wounds, teach children, keep watch, settle disputes, and decide how much power they are willing to give those who protect them.

Beneath that physical realism runs a quieter mythic current, present but never allowed to replace the human world with an easy supernatural explanation.
